5.6.3 Maternity Policy
UNS Maternity Policy Supports Women’s Continued Participation in Work
Pregnancy and childbirth should not force women to choose between their health, their family, and their career. Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) guarantees paid maternity leave and supporting facilities for women employees, in support of SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Institutional Commitment
Circular Letter No. 81.4/UN27/HK.06/2024 on an Inclusive and Anti-Discrimination Campus, signed by the Rector on 1 October 2024, instructs the UNS community to support maternity and paternity policies, “including granting maternity leave for women” (point 8), and to provide clean, safe, and comfortable lactation rooms in every faculty building and work unit (point 9).
Maternity Leave in Practice
The UNS Technical Guidelines for Employee Leave Applications set out maternity leave as one of the types of leave available to UNS employees and how it is applied for through the eKepeg online staffing system:
- Duration. Maternity leave lasts three months.
- Coverage. It applies to the birth of the first to the third child. For the fourth child and beyond, a long leave (cuti besar) of the same duration is granted, with the request not deferrable and the usual requirement of five years’ continuous service waived.
- Procedure. The employee submits the request through eKepeg, selects the birth order (first, second, or third child), and uploads a doctor’s certificate; the direct supervisor reviews the request, and the authorized official approves it.
Impact
Together, the institutional commitment and the operational leave procedure give women lecturers and staff a clear, documented entitlement to time off around childbirth, an online process that does not depend on informal approval, and lactation facilities on their return. This supports women’s continued participation and career progression at UNS.
