Sarasehan Kebudayaan 2024, held at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Solo, was a collaborative event involving Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Indonesia (Unusia), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), the Indonesian State University Council (MRPTNI), and the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP) of the Ministry of Finance. The event was fully supported by the Akar Indonesia Friendship Movement in collaboration with the Indonesian Students Association Alumni (IA PPI) and Mata Garuda LPDP.
Culture is Indonesia’s comparative advantage, and therefore it is essential to develop strategies to transform it into a competitive advantage, as the soft power of the Indonesian nation in the global arena. It is time for the young generation of Indonesia to become more culturally aware, understand their national identity, and know who they truly are.

The Education and Forestry Training Technical Implementation Unit (UPT PPK) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized the Bromo Culture Festival 2024, featuring Reog performance competitions, acoustic performances, and MSME bazaars that enlivened the event on Saturday (June 8, 2024) and Sunday (June 9, 2024). The Bromo Culture Festival (BCF) is one of the programs designed to develop the Alas Bromo area into a multifaceted space that integrates art, culture, education, and environmental focus.
The 2024 festival, now in its third year, showcased a variety of artistic and cultural creations, including Reog and acoustic competitions, as well as MSME exhibitions. It was also part of the 48th Anniversary Celebration of UNS, involving the entire academic community—students, educators, and staff—as well as local residents in the Alas Bromo area.
The highlight of the 2024 Bromo Culture Festival was the Reog art performance, officially opened by Dr. Chatarina Muliana, Acting Rector of UNS, SH, SE, M.Hum., and attended by Timotius Suryadi, Acting Regent of Karanganyar, S.Sos., M.Si. The Reog performance was held as a competition for the rotating Rector’s Trophy. Dr. Chatarina emphasized that UNS and the local community should take pride in the cultural richness and natural beauty of the Alas Bromo Special Purpose Forest (KHDTK).
This event served not only as a celebration but also as a platform to introduce various aspects of the Bromo area managed by UPT PPK UNS. Through the Bromo Culture Festival 2024, participants and visitors could appreciate the richness of Indonesian culture. Beyond its cultural and educational aspects, the festival also reflected the Pentahelix collaboration model, involving government, academia, business, community, and media. The MSMEs fostered by UNS played a vital role in supporting the sustainability of the educational forest.
UNS’s concern extends not only to environmental conservation through the management of Alas Bromo but also to the preservation of cultural heritage, particularly Reog and other traditional performing arts. In addition to the traditional Reog Dadak Merak (also known as Reog Pakem), the festival featured creative Reog and Jaran Kepang performances.
The first day of BCF 2024 presented an acoustic competition for senior high school students, with 12 participating bands. On the following day, the Reog Pakem or Dadak Merak performance featured 12 Reog community groups from across Indonesia. These performances were evaluated by practitioners and academics based on the criteria of Wiraga (movement), Wirama (rhythm), Wirasa (expression), and Wirupa (appearance).
Alas Bromo, located in Karanganyar Regency, is designated as a Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) for forestry education and training. Currently managed by UNS through UPT PPK, the forest serves as a production forest, covering an area of 126.291 hectares, and balances ecological, educational, and cultural functions through community-engaged programs, such as the Bromo Culture Festival.

Additionally, PUI Javanologi’s global Javanese diaspora network could be engaged to contribute and enliven this plan.
The idea was warmly welcomed by ISI Surakarta, represented by Dr. Sunardi, S.Sn., M.Sn. (Head of LP2MP3M ISI Surakarta). The proposal for a Golden Triangle of arts and cultural tourism in Surakarta aligns perfectly with ISI Surakarta’s programs, such as arts-based educational tourism and student final project initiatives. FIB UNS Lecturer Encourages Environmental Preservation Through Macapat Songs
In the face of today’s globalization, understanding of the environment can often be obscured, creating barriers to awareness. As members of the academic community, it is essential to find more flexible and widely accessible ways to communicate important messages, one of which is through culture.
This approach is exemplified by Drs. Sutarjo, M.Hum., a lecturer from the Regional Literature Study Program (Sastra Daerah), Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). He has adapted three Macapat songs into compositions that convey messages encouraging environmental preservation.
The compositions, created with commendable intentions, were uploaded to the FIB UNS YouTube channel to reach a broader audience, allowing viewers to not only enjoy the melodies but also grasp the deeper meaning of environmental awareness embedded in the songs.
The three Macapat songs adapted by Drs. Sutarjo, who also teaches Javanese Rhetoric, is Durma, Sinom, and Dhandhanggula.

FKIP UNS Professor Internationalizes Indonesian Cultural Wisdom in BIPA Teaching at Yale University
Prof. Dr. Kundharu Saddhono, S.S., M.Hum., C.Ed., CISHR, a professor from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), served as the keynote speaker at the closing session of the BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing / Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) program at Yale University. The closing session was held online via Zoom on Saturday, April 20, 2024. This event was part of the BIPA learning program at Yale University, organized by APPBIPA, with Prof. Dr. Kundharu Saddhono as the main speaker. The program involved participants from both Indonesia and Yale University, aiming to introduce BIPA to foreign students and to share insights on internationalizing the Indonesian language and culture in higher education.
As the keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Kundharu Saddhono presented his efforts to teach the Indonesian language to foreign students through Indonesian culture. He emphasized that teaching Indonesian effectively requires various media and approaches to make students feel comfortable in learning the language, one of which is introducing Indonesian culture first.
During his guest lectures in the BIPA program at Yale University, Prof. Dr. Kundharu focused on culture- and tradition-based BIPA teaching, specifically highlighting Javanese culture with a theme centered on Indonesian culinary traditions. His teaching model combines a scientific approach with a thematic approach, focusing on four main activities: observing, questioning, reasoning, and trying. These activities are integrated with cultural learning, enabling students to indirectly acquire Indonesian language skills while engaging with cultural contexts.
The cultural content taught by Prof. Dr. Kundharu was specifically centered on Java, with connections across Central Java, East Java, and Yogyakarta, and included cultural practices from Jogja and Solo. Through this approach, Prof. Dr. Kundharu demonstrates how language instruction can be enriched by cultural immersion, fostering both understanding and appreciation of Indonesian heritage among international students.
