PROMOTE SUSTAINED, INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH, FULL AND PRODUCTIVE EMPLOYMENT AND DECENT WORK FOR ALL

Economic growth should not be limited to increasing numbers it must lead to inclusive development, the creation of decent and meaningful jobs, and respect for labor rights. It must also promote financial access and entrepreneurship without harming the environment. These principles are at the heart of Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8): Decent Work and Economic Growth. In line with this vision, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrates a strong and ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable economic progress through education, innovation, and community engagement.

One clear reflection of this commitment is the establishment of the Innovation Hub (iHub) under the Directorate of Innovation and Commercialization. This initiative serves as a platform to cultivate student-led startups and empower local entrepreneurs. Through programs such as Semesta Bright, UNS offers mentoring, product design assistance, business development support, and market access strategies to help early-stage businesses grow sustainably. These efforts aim not only to reduce unemployment but also to create a new generation of responsible and innovative entrepreneurs.

Moreover, UNS collaborates with the Ministry of Trade through the “UMKM Siap Ekspor” (Export-Ready MSMEs) program, which enhances the export readiness of local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). By providing capacity building, business plan competitions, and coaching clinics, UNS supports job creation and encourages international market access, particularly for small businesses and student entrepreneurs. This program reinforces the university’s role in connecting academic innovation with real-world economic impact.

In response to the rapid digitalization of financial services, UNS has also established a Fintech Center, which serves as a hub for financial technology education, research, and innovation. This center provides training, certification, and knowledge-sharing in fintech, banking, and Islamic finance. Through this, UNS shows its commitment to expanding financial literacy and inclusion, enabling students and communities to access and utilize modern financial tools to support economic resilience and growth.

Through these various programs and partnerships, UNS reaffirms its commitment to making economic growth more inclusive, just, and sustainable. By empowering students, entrepreneurs, and communities with the tools and knowledge needed for innovation and financial independence, UNS plays an active role in achieving the targets of SDG 8, ensuring that economic progress benefits everyone—fairly and responsibly.
