15.3.1 Sustainable Use, Conservation And Restoration Of Land (Policy)
Policy on the Sustainable Use, Conservation, and Restoration of Land Ecosystems
As part of its commitment to conserving natural ecosystems within the university environment, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) enacted Rector’s Regulation Number 20 of 2023 concerning the Management of the Special Purpose Forest Area of Mount Bromo UNS. This policy ensures that the university’s forest area is managed sustainably, encompassing conservation, restoration, and the responsible use of natural resources to maintain environmental balance and sustainability.
This regulation aligns with Law Number 41 of 1999 on Forestry, which emphasizes that forest management aims to ensure the sustainable existence of forests for environmental, social, and economic benefits. It also supports Law Number 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, which mandates all parties to preserve environmental sustainability and prohibits the degradation of ecosystems.
Through this policy, UNS reaffirms its commitment to the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. The policy establishes a governance system for land use in the designated forest area, restricts activities that may cause ecological damage, and introduces restoration mechanisms for degraded areas. The expected outcomes include the recovery of flora and fauna habitats, the maintenance of local ecosystem stability, and the enhancement of ecological research and education opportunities within the campus forest area.
In the future, UNS plans to expand its sustainable land management initiatives to other natural areas, including drylands, through reforestation and ecological restoration programs. These efforts will involve both the academic community and surrounding residents, ensuring that UNS not only fulfills its educational function but also plays an active role in maintaining nature and supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land.
