5.6.9 Paternity Policy

UNS Paternity Policy Enables Fathers to Take Part in Childbirth and Early Childcare

Sharing care between parents is essential for women’s participation in work and study. Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) allows male employees to take leave when their wives give birth, supporting SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Institutional Commitment

Circular Letter No. 81.4/UN27/HK.06/2024 on an Inclusive and Anti-Discrimination Campus, signed by the Rector on 1 October 2024, instructs the UNS community to support maternity and paternity policies, including “leave for men to accompany their wives and children during childbirth” (point 8). Paternity Leave in Practice

The UNS Technical Guidelines for Employee Leave Applications implement this commitment through leave for important reasons (cuti karena alasan penting):

  • Eligibility. A male employee whose wife gives birth or undergoes a cesarean section may be granted leave for important reasons.
  • Duration. Leave for important reasons lasts up to one month, as determined by the authorized official.
  • Procedure. The employee applies through the eKepeg online system, selects “wife giving birth/caesarean section” as the reason, and uploads an inpatient certificate from the health facility.

Impact

By naming childbirth as a specific reason for fathers’ leave and setting a clear online procedure, UNS gives fathers a documented way to support their partners’ recovery and share early childcare duties. This reduces the care burden that would otherwise fall only on mothers, supporting women’s continued participation at UNS.
