13.4.1 Commitment To Carbon Neutral University
Universitas Sebelas Maret’s Commitment to Becoming a Carbon Neutral University
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is strongly committed to supporting Indonesia’s national agenda to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060 and to reduce carbon emissions by 31.89% by 2030. This commitment aligns with the Greenhouse Gas Protocols and reflects UNS’s target to become a carbon-neutral university covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 (partial) emissions. The university consistently monitors and reduces its greenhouse gas emissions from on-campus energy use, electricity consumption, and community activities.
To realize this commitment, UNS implements various actions such as holding car-free days twice a month, promoting energy-efficient electrical equipment, adopting renewable energy, using environmentally friendly campus transportation, developing green buildings, operating a university waste bank, and providing lithium battery charging stations.
Furthermore, UNS actively encourages research initiatives that support carbon neutrality, including (1) the development of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) capable of generating power even under low light intensity, and (2) advanced research by the Lithium Battery Center of Excellence (PUI Baterai Lithium) focusing on energy storage technologies for electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.
