3.3.5 Mental Health Support for Students

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is committed to supporting student mental health through a comprehensive approach that combines awareness-building initiatives with access to counseling and psychological services. In 2025, the university provided various forms of support to address students’ psychological needs, including free counseling and fee-based professional services. These efforts reflect UNS’s commitment to making mental health support accessible to students with different needs.

A. Active Promotion of Good Mental Health

UNS actively promotes good mental health among students through mental health education, early identification, preventive support, and a supportive campus environment. In 2025, UNS strengthened these efforts by training student volunteers as Mental Health Agents and developing counseling initiatives at the university and faculty levels. These initiatives aim to increase mental health awareness, encourage early recognition of psychological concerns, and foster a campus culture in which students feel supported in addressing their mental health needs.

1. Mental Health Agent Training to Promote Student Mental Health Awareness

On May 9, 2025, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), through its Subdirectorate of Student Counseling Services, organized the formation and training of Mental Health Agents (MHA) at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP). The program involved students from various faculties and was supported by student organizations, the UNS Student Executive Board (BEM UNS), and PIK R Cakra. Through this initiative, UNS actively promotes good mental health by building a campus environment that encourages awareness, prevention, and shared responsibility for student well-being.

The training featured mental health education delivered by Afia Fitriani, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist, and Berliana Widi Scarvanovi, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist, Head of the Subdirectorate of Student Counseling Services. Participants learned about common mental health challenges among students, risk and protective factors, early identification, and Psychological First Aid (PFA), based on the principles of Look, Listen, and Link. They were also introduced to the counseling services available at UNS and the importance of referring students to professional support when necessary.

Through the MHA program, UNS empowers students to promote mental health awareness within their faculties and student organizations, recognize when peers may need support, and help connect them with appropriate counseling services. By combining education, preventive support, and student participation, this initiative strengthens UNS’s efforts to promote good mental health and foster a more supportive campus community.

2. Sasmita Jiwa and Faculty-Level Initiatives to Promote a Mental Health-Supportive Campus

In 2025, UNS strengthened its commitment to promoting good mental health through Sasmita Jiwa, a student counseling service managed under the university’s student counseling structure. The initiative expands student support beyond academic and career concerns by encouraging students to recognize their mental health needs, express personal concerns, and seek appropriate guidance in a supportive and confidential environment.

Mental health promotion also extends to the faculty level through U Kons, the Counseling Unit established by FKIP UNS. The unit offers in-person and online counseling and provides students with different support options, including professional counselors and psychologists, spiritual and cultural guidance, and peer counselors. By introducing these options and emphasizing confidentiality, UNS seeks to reduce barriers to seeking help and increase student awareness of available mental health support.

The reported use of Sasmita Jiwa, which had served at least 230 clients according to the source, indicates student engagement with the counseling service; however, the reporting period for this figure should be confirmed. Together, Sasmita Jiwa and U Kons demonstrate UNS’s efforts to actively promote good mental health, encourage help-seeking behavior, and foster a campus culture that recognizes psychological well-being as an essential part of student welfare.

B. Access to Free Mental Health Support through Sasmita Jiwa

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) provides free mental health support to all active students through Sasmita Jiwa, its Student Counseling Service, officially launched on February 7, 2025. The service offers psychological counseling to help students address personal, social, academic, and emotional challenges. According to its official registration information, the service is exclusively available to active UNS students at no cost.

Students can access counseling through in-person sessions at the UNS Medical Center or online sessions via Zoom. Services are available Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Students must complete an online registration form that includes personal information, informed consent, and mental health screening. The service administrator then arranges an appointment based on the queue and the availability of counselors, psychologists, and facilities. Appointments are generally scheduled at least two days after registration.

Sasmita Jiwa also emphasizes the confidentiality of student information throughout the counseling process. By providing free counseling, online and in-person access, a clear registration procedure, and initial mental health screening, UNS enables students to seek appropriate mental health support without financial barriers. This service demonstrates the university’s commitment to accessible mental health care and student well-being, contributing to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.

C. Access to Charged Mental Health Support through ULAPSI

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), through its Faculty of Psychology, provides access to professional psychological services through the Psychological Service Unit (ULAPSI). The unit offers psychological assistance to students and the general public through a range of fee-based services, providing an additional option for students who require professional mental health support.

According to ULAPSI’s official service listing, available services include psychologist counseling, priced at IDR 200,000 for a 60-minute session, as well as psychological assessments such as scholastic aptitude tests (IDR 250,000), health-related psychological tests (IDR 300,000), and other assessments. These services allow students to access professional psychological consultation and assessment for their individual needs, subject to the applicable service requirements and fees.

Through ULAPSI, UNS provides access to charged mental health support in addition to its free student counseling services. The availability of professional psychological services with published fees demonstrates that students have an additional pathway to seek psychological assistance, supporting their mental well-being and contributing to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
