12.2.6 Policy For Minimisation Of Disposable Items
Policy for Minimisation of Disposable Items
The issue of increasing waste from disposable items, such as plastic and paper, has become a serious challenge with a direct impact on the environment. In response to this issue, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has issued clear policies to minimize the use of disposable items on campus as part of its commitment to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
These policies are implemented through several official policies:
-
- Circular Letter of the Vice Rector No. 29/UN27/SE/2020 concerning the Prohibition of Using Single-Use Plastic Drinking Water Packaging and/or Plastic Bags at UNS.

- Circular Letter of the Vice Rector No. 29/UN27/SE/2020 concerning the Prohibition of Using Single-Use Plastic Drinking Water Packaging and/or Plastic Bags at UNS.
- Rector’s Instruction No. 28 of 2023 on the Paper and Plastic Usage Reduction Program at UNS Campus. This instruction promotes the reduction and efficient use of paper while encouraging the utilization of information technology in organizational management and academic activities.

These policies aim to restrict items that significantly contribute to waste generation, including plastic, paper, and other disposable materials. Through these measures, UNS actively encourages the entire academic community to adopt reusable and environmentally friendly items.
Concrete actions include using double-sided printing for documents and academic reports, reusing blank paper, and implementing digital management through the official website, email, SMS Gateway, and other information technologies. These efforts align with Law No. 18 of 2008 on Waste Management and Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, which emphasize the obligation to reduce waste through segregation, recycling, and reuse.
The tangible outcome of these policies is a reduction in the consumption of disposable paper and plastic on campus, accompanied by an increase in the use of digital media for administrative and academic purposes. The expected outcomes include the establishment of an environmentally friendly culture, improved resource efficiency, and a decrease in disposable waste released into the environment.
For long-term sustainability, UNS is committed to strengthening digital services, expanding environmentally friendly initiatives across all faculties and units, and involving students in green technology-based innovations. Through these policies, UNS demonstrates its commitment to supporting SDG 12 by promoting more responsible and sustainable consumption practices.
