15.2.2 Sustainably Farmed Food On Campus
UNS Policies to Ensure Sustainably Farmed Food on Campus
Food security and the environmental impacts of food production have become major concerns in sustainable development. Recognizing this, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has implemented clear policies to ensure that all food available on campus is sourced from sustainable farming practices. This commitment is reflected in the university’s procurement policy, which emphasizes ethical sourcing and sustainability principles, as regulated in Rector’s Regulation No. 38 of 2021 on Guidelines for Goods and Services Procurement.
In addition, UNS issued a Circular Letter on the Use of Sustainably Farmed Agricultural Products in 2023, which mandates that all campus catering services, canteens, and food procurement units must use raw materials derived from sustainable agriculture. This includes the use of local products, environmentally friendly cultivation methods, and support for local farmers and food producers who apply sustainable practices. These policies demonstrate UNS’s commitment to operating a campus environment that not only educates but also sets a practical example of environmentally and socially responsible food consumption.
The implementation of these policies has led to healthier, safer, and more environmentally friendly food options on campus. It also enables the participation of local farmers and producers in the campus supply chain, positioning UNS as a model of best practices in sustainable food management on campus. The expected outcomes include increased awareness among the academic community about sustainable consumption, direct support for local farmers, and a measurable reduction in the carbon footprint of the food supply chain.
Going forward, UNS is committed to expanding collaborations with local food SMEs, strengthening green standards in food procurement contracts, and integrating education on sustainable consumption into academic and non-academic activities. Through these ongoing efforts, UNS reinforces its contribution to SDG 15: Life on Land and promotes the creation of a healthy and sustainable campus food system.
