Student Union: Empowering Student Democracy, Representation, and Social Impact at UNS

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) maintains a recognised and independent student union at the university-wide level, represented by the Student Executive Board of Universitas Sebelas Maret (BEM UNS). Formally acknowledged by the university as a Student Activity Unit (Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa/UKM), BEM UNS serves as the official student representative body, facilitating student voice, governance participation, and engagement in academic and social initiatives across faculties.

Comprehensive Representation at University Level

BEM UNS functions as the central representative body coordinating student aspirations from all faculties and academic programs. It operates at the university level and engages directly with institutional leadership through formal mechanisms such as rectorate audiences, policy discussions, and coordination meetings.

This role is clearly demonstrated through a university-level audience held on September 9, 2025, where BEM UNS, together with faculty-level student representatives and student governing bodies, formally conveyed student concerns and policy recommendations to university leadership. Key issues discussed included campus safety, financial transparency (RKAT), infrastructure and facility improvements, administrative processes, academic systems, and integrity and ethics.

The discussion resulted in a series of institutional commitments, including improved transparency in financial planning, enhancements to campus facilities (such as CCTV, parking, and accessibility), strengthening of academic and administrative systems, and follow-up actions on integrity-related issues. This engagement demonstrates an active, structured, and impactful dialogue between students and university management, reinforcing the role of BEM UNS as a key partner in participatory governance.

The official UNS website further recognizes BEM UNS as a university-level organization responsible for coordinating student aspirations, enhancing engagement, and contributing to a dynamic and inclusive academic environment.

Affiliation with National Student Union Networks

BEM UNS is actively connected to national student networks through its involvement in the Indonesian Student Executive Board Alliance/Aliansi BEM Seluruh Indonesia (BEM SI). This affiliation is demonstrated through participation in national coordination structures and forums.

Notably, BEM UNS representatives have participated in national-level assemblies (BEM SI National Congress 2025/Musyawarah Nasional BEM SI 2025 at IPB University) and held leadership roles, such as Regional Coordinator for Central Java–Yogyakarta–East Java, reflecting formal engagement with the national student union network. This connection enables UNS students to contribute to broader discussions on national education policy, governance, and social issues.

Democratic Election of Student Union Leadership

The leadership of BEM UNS is elected through a formal and democratic process known as the General Student Election (Pemilihan Raya Mahasiswa/PEMIRA), ensuring that all students have the right to vote.

The election process is administered by an independent student election committee (Komisi Pemilihan Umum Mahasiswa/KPU-M) and includes structured stages such as candidate registration, campaigning, voting, and result verification.

Official documentation confirms that:

  • Elections are conducted through a regulated timeline and an open recruitment process
  • Voting is carried out through a secure system accessible to students using institutional credentials (SSO)
  • Clear criteria are established to ensure vote validity and election integrity

This system ensures a transparent, accountable, and inclusive election process, providing elected leaders with a legitimate mandate from the student body.

Student Support, Engagement, and Social Impact

Beyond governance, BEM UNS actively contributes to student development and social impact through a range of initiatives implemented in 2025:

Student Engagement & Humanitarian Action

The Satu Aksi Donor Darah (SADAR) program mobilized students and the wider community to participate in blood donation activities, successfully collecting 40 blood units. This initiative promotes social responsibility, empathy, and public health awareness among students.

Community Empowerment and Sustainable Livelihoods

Through the Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa), BEM UNS facilitated training on oyster mushroom processing for local women’s groups (PKK) in Boyolali. This program enhanced community skills in sustainable food production and created opportunities for income generation.

These initiatives demonstrate the role of BEM UNS as an active student union that not only represents student interests but also facilitates meaningful engagement in community development, public health, and sustainable economic practices. Collectively, these programs strengthen student engagement, enhance practical learning experiences, and reinforce the university’s commitment to societal impact.

Conclusion

Through its formal institutional recognition, active role in university governance, affiliation with national student networks, and democratically elected leadership, BEM UNS fully satisfies the criteria of a recognised student union. The organisation plays a critical role in strengthening participatory governance, empowering student voices, and fostering social responsibility within and beyond the university.
