16.3.3 Participation in Government Research: Undertake Policy-Focused Research in Collaboration with Government Departments

UNS Collaboration with BRIN in Policy-Focused Research

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) actively participates in policy-focused research through collaboration with government institutions. A concrete example of this collaboration is the visit and partnership between UNS’s Master of Laws Program and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), a government institution in the field of research. This activity provides UNS with the opportunity to directly contribute to the development of applied legal research that is relevant to national policy issues.

In his remarks, the Head of the Master of Laws Program at UNS emphasized the importance of research that supports the development of legal texts, policies, and legislation. This emphasis demonstrates UNS’s commitment to producing policy-focused research that can make a tangible contribution to government and societal decision-making. Through this approach, UNS ensures that its academic research is not only theoretical but also relevant and responsive to the needs of public policy.

UNS’s academic community, including students and faculty, actively participates in research activities with BRIN. This participation includes discussions, data collection, and contributions to ongoing research projects, including current legal issues such as climate change, intellectual property rights, and international law. Such involvement ensures that the research conducted is collaborative and supports the learning and capacity development of the UNS academic community.

The long-term goal of this collaboration is to produce research that has a lasting impact on society and supports legal innovation. By strengthening synergy between the university and government institutions, UNS not only participates in legal research but also contributes to the development of effective and sustainable policies. This initiative aligns with SDG 16 indicators on participation in government research and policy-focused research, emphasizing collaboration between academics and government to create solutions for social and legal challenges.

Through this partnership, UNS affirms its role as an institution actively engaged in government research that is policy-oriented, while also building the academic capacity of its community and expanding the impact of research on society at large. This collaboration serves as tangible evidence of UNS’s contribution to achieving SDG 16, particularly in the context of policy-based research involving direct interaction between the university and government institutions.

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) conducted the research in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN)

Hashfi Hawali Abdul Matin from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sebelas Maret University (UNS), conducted research in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to support policy-making related to land use.
The study enables policymakers to identify areas or types of land use that contribute most significantly to environmental degradation. It also helps them design zoning plans—including core, buffer, and utilization zones—that achieve a balance between conservation and sustainable resource use.
