16.3.4 Neutral Platform To Discuss Issues
UNS as a Neutral Platform and Safe Space for Political and Public Policy Dialogue
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is committed to providing a neutral platform and safe space for all stakeholders to engage in open and constructive discussions on political and public policy issues. Through various academic and student activities, UNS encourages healthy, balanced, and ethical cross-perspective dialogue aimed at strengthening students’ understanding of democratic dynamics and fostering a participatory political culture.
Here are some examples demonstrating how UNS facilitates public political discussions on campus:
Inauguration of UNS Student Executive Board (BEM) and National Dialogue themed “Youth and Student Reconciliation After the 2024 General Election”
UNS, through the Student Executive Board (BEM), organized the event “Inauguration of BEM UNS and National Dialogue” themed “Youth and Student Reconciliation After the 2024 General Election” on 2 April 2024 at UNS Inn. The event featured Central Java Police Chief Irjen Pol Ahmad Luthfi, Chairman of the Indonesian Prosecutors Commission Prof. Dr. Pujiyono SH, MH, and student representatives from various faculties. This forum served as a neutral and safe space for students, law enforcement officers, and academics to openly discuss the role of youth in safeguarding democracy and expressing aspirations peacefully. Through this activity, UNS reinforced its commitment to providing a multi-stakeholder discussion space that upholds ethics, openness, and peace.
Election Phoria: KPU Central Java Goes to Campus
UNS actively provides a neutral space for public institutions and young people to discuss democratic issues through the event “Election Phoria: KPU Central Java Goes to Campus” on 31 August 2024. Held on the UNS Rectorate grounds, the event was organized by the Central Java Regional General Election Commission (KPU) in collaboration with UNS and featured speakers including Head of the Socialization and Education Division KPU Central Java Akmaliyah, UNS Professor of Constitutional Law Prof. Sunny Ummul Firdaus, and BEM UNS President Agung Lucky Pradita. During this interactive talk show on youth participation in the 2024 Regional Elections, speakers encouraged students to actively participate, reject money politics, and counter political hoaxes. This activity demonstrates UNS’s commitment to supporting a peaceful, inclusive, and integrity-driven democratic process by providing a safe dialogue space for stakeholders from government institutions, academics, and students.
Discussion “Towards the 2024 Regional Elections: Regional Autonomy under the Grip of Central Political Influence?”
As part of efforts to create a neutral and educational political discussion space, UNS, in collaboration with the Islamic Student Association (HMI) FISIP, KMAP FISIP, and BEM UNS, held a public discussion titled “Towards the 2024 Regional Elections: Regional Autonomy under the Grip of Central Political Influence?” on 21 May 2024 at the FISIP UNS Forest. The event featured speakers from various student organizations and addressed critical topics on decentralization, the conduct of regional elections, and potential central political intervention in local governance. The discussion was open and interactive, encouraging students to think critically about the national political system and the importance of ethical participation in politics. Through this forum, UNS provides a safe and inclusive space for young people to discuss public policy issues in a rational and constructive manner.
