CONSERVE AND SUSTAINABLY USE THE OCEANS, SEAS AND MARINE RESOURCES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Healthy oceans and seas are vital to sustaining life on Earth, covering 70 percent of the planet’s surface and providing essential resources such as food, energy, and water. However, human activities have caused significant damage to marine ecosystems through pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction. Recognizing the critical importance of preserving marine life, Sebelas Maret University (UNS) is committed to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14  Life Below Water through education, research, and community engagement.

UNS conducts research focused on marine ecology, sustainable fisheries management, and pollution mitigation. Although UNS is located inland, the university actively collaborates with coastal communities, governmental agencies, and environmental organizations to address marine conservation challenges. This includes efforts to develop sustainable aquaculture practices, monitor water quality, and promote policies that reduce plastic waste and other pollutants entering oceans and waterways.

In addition, UNS integrates environmental stewardship into its academic programs by educating students about the interconnectedness of terrestrial and marine ecosystems and the importance of protecting aquatic biodiversity. Through community service initiatives and awareness campaigns, UNS mobilizes students and staff to participate in activities such as river clean-ups and advocacy for responsible resource use, which ultimately contribute to healthier marine environments downstream.

UNS’s commitment to SDG 14 reflects its broader dedication to environmental sustainability and the protection of natural resources. By fostering innovation, knowledge sharing, and active participation, UNS plays an important role in promoting the responsible management and preservation of marine life, ensuring that oceans remain healthy and productive for current and future generations.
