Sustainability Committee and Executive Leadership Involvement at UNS

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has formally established a Sustainability Committee, with direct involvement of executive leadership at the highest institutional level.

This is evidenced by Rector’s Decree No. 529/UN27/HK.02/2025 concerning the establishment of the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking Preparation Team of Universitas Sebelas Maret for 2025. While formally designated as a preparation team, this body functions as the university’s Sustainability Committee, as its mandate encompasses all key dimensions of sustainable development, including infrastructure, energy, climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education.

Formal Establishment of the Sustainability Committee

The Rector’s Decree establishes a dedicated institutional body responsible for coordinating and advancing sustainability initiatives across the university. Its core functions include:

  • Coordinating sustainability-related data and institutional reporting
  • Supporting evaluation and continuous improvement of sustainability performance
  • Facilitating the implementation of green campus initiatives across multiple domains
  • Aligning institutional practices with recognized sustainability frameworks

These responsibilities demonstrate that the committee serves as a central governance platform for sustainability, rather than a purely administrative or temporary task force.

The decree is valid for the full operational period from 2 January to 31 December 2025, confirming that the committee is an active, formally mandated structure within the university.

Executive Leadership Participation in the Committee

A key strength of this committee is the direct involvement of executive leadership, as clearly indicated in the Appendix (page 5) of the Rector’s Decree.

The committee is overseen by a Steering Committee (“Pengarah”), which includes:

  • Rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret
  • Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information
  • Director of Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Reputation

The Rector and Vice Rector are members of the university’s Executive Leadership Team, and their formal inclusion in this structure demonstrates that:

  • Sustainability governance is directly led and supervised at the executive level
  • Strategic decisions related to sustainability are aligned with institutional priorities
  • The committee operates with strong authority and institutional accountability

The inclusion of the Rector and Vice Rector in the steering structure demonstrates that sustainability governance is directly led and overseen at the university’s highest executive level.

Committee Scope and Multidisciplinary Coverage

The Sustainability Committee operates through a structured and multidisciplinary approach, supported by specialized working groups covering:

  • Setting and Infrastructure
  • Energy and Climate Change
  • Waste
  • Water
  • Transportation
  • Education
  • Planning
  • Information Systems
  • Administration

This comprehensive scope ensures sustainability is addressed across all major operational and academic areas of the university, reflecting a holistic, integrated governance model.

Institutional Integration

The Sustainability Committee is embedded within the broader institutional framework and works in coordination with the Subdirectorate of Green Campus and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring alignment between strategic direction, coordination, and implementation.

This integrated structure enables sustainability initiatives to be consistently implemented and monitored across the university.

Conclusion

Universitas Sebelas Maret has clearly demonstrated that:

  • A formal Sustainability Committee has been established through an official Rector’s Decree
  • Executive leadership (Rector and Vice Rector) is directly involved as part of the committee’s steering structure
  • Sustainability governance is centrally coordinated, multidisciplinary, and institutionally embedded

This confirms that sustainability at UNS is governed through a structured, executive-led committee system, ensuring strategic oversight and effective implementation across the institution.
