Provide free access to educational resources for those not studying at the university.
UNS Strengthens Public Access to Educational Resources and Lifelong Learning in 2025
Throughout 2025, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) continued to provide free access to public educational resources for individuals who are not enrolled at the university, including teachers, school students, educators, and members of the wider community. By opening its learning facilities, offering free certified online learning programs, and making educational content publicly accessible, UNS expanded opportunities for continuing education and lifelong learning beyond its student community.
These initiatives support SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. They demonstrate UNS’s commitment to making educational resources more accessible, reducing financial barriers to learning, and extending the benefits of higher education to the wider public.
In 2025, UNS provided public access to educational resources through three main approaches: free online learning programs leading to certificates, free access to campus facilities and learning spaces, and free access to online educational resources.
Free Courses and Online Learning Programs Leading to Certificates
The Master’s Program in Mathematics Education at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS organized a series of free online educational webinars in 2025. These programs were open to the public through online registration and provided participants with electronic certificates (e-certificates), presentation materials, and opportunities to interact directly with the speakers.
The program included:
- Series 1 – “Menjelajahi Riset Inovatif dalam Pendidikan: Berani Berinovasi Lewat Design-Based Research” (Exploring Innovative Research in Education through Design-Based Research), held on Thursday, 5 June 2025 via Zoom, with Pasttita Ayu Laksmiwati, M.Pd., Ph.D. as the speaker. Announcement
- Series 2 – “Pemanfaatan Teknologi dalam Pembelajaran Matematika: Dari Petualangan Nyata hingga Pengalaman Imersif” (Using Technology in Mathematics Learning: From Real-World Exploration to Immersive Experience), held on Wednesday, 25 June 2025 via Zoom, with Dr. rer. nat. Adi Nur Cahyono, M.Pd. (Universitas Negeri Semarang) as the speaker. Announcement
Both sessions were provided free of charge, allowing teachers, prospective researchers, and other interested members of the public to participate without financial barriers. The provision of e-certificates and learning materials further supported participants’ continuing professional development and lifelong learning.
Through these free certified online learning programs, UNS extended educational opportunities beyond formal university enrollment and supported wider public access to quality educational resources.
Free Access to Campus Facilities and Equipment for Public Learning
UNS also opened its campus learning facilities to students and educators from schools and educational institutions outside the university. UNS Central Library welcomed several school groups for educational visits, literacy activities, and learning experiences using university library facilities.
Examples of these activities in 2025 included:
- SMA MTA Surakarta, reported on 29 August 2025. During the welcome, the library reaffirmed its commitment to remain open to the wider community. Source
- SMP MTA Gemolong, Sragen, on 22–23 September 2025 in the Werkudara Room, involving 230 students (145 female and 85 male) with their teachers. The visit introduced students to literacy and modern library technology. Source
- SMKN 1 Kedawung, Sragen, on 27 October 2025, in the Nakula Room, as a study visit on library management. The Head of the UPT Library stated that the UNS Library is open to anyone, including secondary schools, not only higher education institutions. Source
Beyond the library, the Faculty of Law (FH) UNS also welcomed an educational visit from SMA Sumbangsih on 15 December 2025 at the Auditorium of Building 3. The activity introduced students to university life, admission pathways, and the academic environment.
By opening its library and other educational spaces to external school communities, UNS provided free access to campus facilities as public educational resources. These activities enabled school students and teachers to experience university learning environments, explore educational facilities, and gain knowledge beyond their regular school settings.
This approach supports SDG 4 by expanding access to educational opportunities and promoting inclusive learning experiences for individuals who are not studying at UNS.
Free Access to Online Educational Resources
In addition to physical facilities, UNS provided free access to online educational resources through its public YouTube channel, LPPM UNS OFFICIAL. In 2025, the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS published videos documenting community engagement programs and educational activities.
These videos were publicly accessible without registration fees or subscription requirements, allowing educators, community groups, and members of the general public to access educational information beyond the university campus.
Examples included:
- “Tingkatkan kesehatan dan kesejahteraan lansia melalui PKM PPKG LPPM UNS 2025 bersama RSPW Surakarta” (1 September 2025). This video documents a community engagement program conducted by the Center for Population and Gender Studies (PPKG), LPPM UNS, in collaboration with the elderly integrated health post (Posyandu Lansia) and supported by Panti Waluyo Hospital, Surakarta. The program addressed community health and well-being and was associated with SDG 3, SDG 4, and SDG 17.
- “Pengabdian BIMA Kemdiktisaintek 2025 – Adopsi Pendekatan STEAM & CT PKBM Wiyata Girimulya Wonogiri” (uploaded on 22 September 2025). This video documents a community engagement program that strengthened educators’ knowledge and practical skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) and Computational Thinking at PKBM Wiyata Girimulya, Wonogiri. The program also provided Tangible Rangers learning kits and Canva Team premium accounts to support teaching and learning activities.
By publishing these materials through an openly accessible digital platform, UNS extended the reach of its educational and community engagement activities. The availability of these online resources allows people outside the university to access knowledge, learn about educational innovations, and gain insights from community-based programs without geographical or financial barriers.
These initiatives contribute to SDG 4 by expanding access to educational information and promoting learning opportunities beyond formal education settings.
Supporting Community-Based Education and Lifelong Learning
UNS also extended educational opportunities through community service programs that strengthened the knowledge and professional capacity of educators outside the university:
- Adopsi Pendekatan STEAM dan Computational Thinking Berbasis Inovasi Global untuk Meningkatkan Kualitas Pembelajaran di PKBM Wiyata Giri Mulya Wonogiri, led by Dr. Farida Nurhasanah, M.Pd., under the BIMA Kemdiktisaintek 2025 programme. This initiative introduced innovative teaching approaches and strengthened educators’ capacity at a community learning center (PKBM).
- Pendampingan Pembelajaran Matematika dengan Pendekatan Deep Learning, led by Dr. Imam Sujadi, M.Si., and team. Conducted from July to September 2025 at SMP Negeri 6 Surakarta, the program provided mentoring for 20 mathematics teachers from junior secondary schools in Surakarta to improve their teaching practices and mathematical learning approaches.
- Community-Based Health and Well-Being Education for Older People, led by Dr. Tri Rejeki Andayani, S.Psi., M.Si., and the PPKG LPPM UNS team, in collaboration with Posyandu Lansia of Panti Waluyo Hospital, Surakarta. The program was funded through UNS non-state budget (non-APBN) allocations for fiscal year 2025.
Through these community-based initiatives, UNS extended the benefits of its academic expertise beyond the university and supported continuing learning among educators and community groups. In particular, programs targeting teachers and community learning centers contributed to improving educational capacity and expanding learning opportunities outside formal higher education.
Contribution to SDG 4
UNS’s provision of free educational resources in 2025 demonstrates its commitment to making quality education more inclusive and accessible to the wider community. By providing free certified learning programs, opening campus facilities to school communities, and publishing educational content through publicly accessible digital platforms, UNS enabled individuals who are not enrolled at the university to benefit from its educational resources.
These initiatives reduce financial and institutional barriers to learning while supporting continuing education, professional development, and lifelong learning opportunities. Through this approach, UNS contributes to SDG 4 by promoting inclusive and equitable quality education and expanding lifelong learning opportunities for all, including people beyond its formal student population.
