3.3.5 Mental Health Support for Students
Mental Health Support at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS): Promoting Well-being and a Supportive Campus Culture
Mental health is a crucial aspect of student well-being and academic performance. Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) consistently takes concrete steps to create a healthy, inclusive, and supportive campus environment through various services and programs focusing on mental health. Two main initiatives that demonstrate this commitment are the Sasmita Jiwa Counseling Service and the Psychological Service Unit (ULAPSI), which provide professional psychological support through both free and charged access, along with educational activities that promote awareness and understanding of mental well-being.
- Sasmita Jiwa Counseling Service: Free and Inclusive Mental Health Support for Students
UNS demonstrates its strong commitment to student welfare through the establishment of Sasmita Jiwa, a safe and inclusive counseling space where students can receive professional psychological support at no charge.
The service operates under the Directorate of Student Affairs and Alumni and is available to all active students. Counseling sessions can be conducted face-to-face or online, ensuring that students from all faculties can access mental health support whenever needed. Through its official digital platforms and social media @sasmitajiwa.uns, students can easily register, access service schedules, and join educational programs that raise awareness and knowledge about mental health.
Sasmita Jiwa is built on three key pillars: promotion, prevention, and recovery. The promotional pillar focuses on education and awareness campaigns on the importance of mental health in campus life, representing an active promotion of good mental health. The preventive pillar encompasses mental health screening, training, and character development, while the recovery pillar offers counseling and psychological interventions conducted by professionals from the Faculty of Psychology. This ensures that the support offered not only focuses on prevention but also provides holistic recovery for students who need it.
Through this initiative, UNS takes concrete action to support SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by emphasizing that student success is not only measured by academic achievements but also by emotional balance and mental stability. Moving forward, UNS plans to expand Sasmita Jiwa’s reach across all faculties and strengthen its educational programs to build a caring, open, and stigma-free campus culture where every student can grow and thrive in a healthy and supportive environment.

- Psychological Service Unit (ULAPSI): Professional and Charged Mental Health Support for Students and the Public
In addition to Sasmita Jiwa, UNS also provides the Psychological Service Unit (ULAPSI) under the Faculty of Psychology, which serves as a professional center for counseling and psychological assistance for both students and the general public.
Through ULAPSI, students can access individual counseling, psychological assessment, self-development training, and group psychoeducation, all delivered by certified experts who maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and empathy. The service is charged, providing a clear example of access to professional mental health support with a service fee.
Beyond counseling sessions, ULAPSI actively organizes psychoeducation programs and training activities that raise awareness about the importance of mental health, help students develop stress management skills, and promote a campus culture that values openness and mutual care.
The continuous efforts of ULAPSI in supporting students’ psychological well-being serve as strong evidence of UNS’s contribution to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). Through this service, UNS provides a safe and professional space where students can develop holistically—not only intellectually, but also mentally and emotionally.

Through these two mental health initiatives, UNS reinforces its commitment to SDG 3 by ensuring that every student has access to both free and charged mental health support, as well as active promotion of good mental health. These efforts create a campus environment that is healthy, inclusive, and supportive, enabling students to reach their full potential while maintaining their emotional and mental well-being.
