6.3.3 Free Drinking Water Provide
Provision of Free and Safe Drinking Water at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS)
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), in collaboration with the Directorate General of Human Settlements and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), provides free drinking water for students, staff, and visitors through the Drinking Water Management System (Sistem Penyediaan Air Minum – SPAM). This facility ensures the availability of safe and clean drinking water on campus, aligning with UNS’s commitment to sustainability and SDG 6.
The SPAM system utilizes ultrafiltration (UF) technology and a solar-powered system, reducing energy consumption and promoting environmentally friendly operations. With an investment of approximately IDR 13.5 billion, the system can produce 2.5 liters of treated water per second, meeting the daily hydration needs of over 37,300 students and the broader UNS community.
To make drinking water easily accessible, UNS has installed 39 drinking water dispensers and 90 drinking water fountains or taps located across faculties and work units. These facilities enable students, university staff, and campus visitors to refill their bottles or tumblers with free drinking water, thereby reducing the use of single-use plastic bottles and minimizing plastic waste on campus.
In 2024, UNS provided research and community service funding, focusing on SDG 6 topics, to achieve SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. For example, the research “Optimization of Solar-Powered and IoT-Based Water Pump for Community-Based Drinking Water and Sanitation Supply in Dukuh Kalisogo, Plesan Village, Sukoharjo” by Nanang Maulana Yoeseph, S.Si., M.Cs. supports the provision of clean drinking water access for communities through the utilization of solar energy and IoT-based systems.
