Sustainable Food and Beverage Procurement

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is committed to supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger by implementing sustainable food procurement practices within the university. A key initiative reflecting this commitment is UNS Food, a business unit managed by the Business Management Agency (Badan Pengelola Usaha – BPU) UNS, which provides catering and food services for both internal and external university activities. UNS Food was officially established on 9 February 2022 and is located at Jalan Ir. Sutami No. 36 A, Kentingan, Surakarta, Central Java.

As part of its sustainability strategy, UNS Food prioritises the purchase of products from local and sustainable sources. In its operations, UNS Food collaborates with 28 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Soloraya region, covering local catering, bakeries, and restaurants. Through these partnerships, UNS Food ensures that raw materials are sourced from local farmers and producers who follow sustainable practices. This approach not only strengthens the local economy but also reduces carbon emissions by minimising transportation distances for food supplies.

By sourcing food locally and sustainably, UNS Food contributes to food security and the resilience of local food systems, while also raising awareness among the university community about the importance of consuming healthy, nutritious, and environmentally responsible food.

UNS Food offers a variety of menu options, including snack boxes, meal boxes, fruit packages, and buffet services, as well as additional services such as custom hampers and special orders. Internal orders are managed through the SIMPEL system (Sistem Informasi Pembelanjaan), while external clients can contact UNS Food directly.

Through the operations of UNS Food, UNS demonstrates a practical commitment to prioritising local and sustainable food sources, directly supporting the development of sustainable food systems and reinforcing the local economy. This initiative exemplifies how UNS implements the principles of SDG 2: Zero Hunger in its institutional practices.
