Strengthening Policy Capacity through Academic Engagement and Government Collaboration
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) actively strengthens policymakers’ knowledge, skills, and institutional capacity through outreach, general education, upskilling, and capacity-building activities. Through its faculties and research centers, UNS works with government institutions and regional authorities to share academic expertise, provide policy-related education, and support the development of evidence-based public policies. These activities cover areas such as economics, law, public finance, regional development, and institutional governance.
By connecting academic knowledge with the practical needs of government institutions, UNS helps policymakers formulate, implement, and evaluate effective, accountable policies. These contributions support the principles of SDG 16 by promoting stronger public institutions, transparent governance, access to justice, and informed decision-making.
1. Research-Based Policy Planning Workshop
On October 15, 2025, the Development Economics Study Program of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at UNS organized a Research-Based Policy Planning Workshop at UNS Inn. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas and the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) of Central Java Province. It brought together approximately 25 participants, including academics, researchers, and representatives of Regional Development Planning Agencies (Bappeda) and BRIDA from Surakarta, Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Boyolali, Sragen, and Wonogiri.
The workshop provided general education and capacity-building for regional government planners on development planning and evidence-based policymaking. The sessions covered development planning and policy paper preparation, using academic research to develop policy briefs, and the role of regional research and innovation in long-term development planning. Discussions also addressed fiscal planning, budgeting, and policy evaluation based on reliable data.
Through this initiative, UNS supports upskilling regional policy-makers and technical planning officers to develop effective, measurable, evidence-based public policies. This engagement strengthens regional governance and supports more accountable, sustainable public decision-making.
2. BUMD Governance Workshop
On November 3, 2025, the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at UNS, in collaboration with the Central Java Representative Office of the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP), organized a Workshop on Regional-Owned Enterprise (BUMD) Governance at UNS Tower. The event was attended by directors and supervisory board members from 32 regional-owned enterprises across Central Java, including regional drinking water companies and provincial-level enterprises.
