Dedicated Sustainability Courses Across Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs at UNS

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrates its commitment to education for sustainability through dedicated Environmental Science degree programs at the undergraduate (S1), master’s (S2), and doctoral (S3) levels. These full-degree programs are specifically designed to address sustainability challenges and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing students with comprehensive knowledge, research competencies, and practical skills in environmental management and sustainable development.

The Environmental Science undergraduate program offers 70 courses covering a broad range of sustainability-related subjects. These include Basic Environmental Science, Environmental Sociology, Environmental Management Systems, Clean Production, Climate Change Studies, Sustainable Development Planning, and Freshwater Resource Management. The curriculum also includes laboratory and field practicums, enabling students to apply scientific knowledge and develop practical solutions to environmental challenges.

At the master’s level, the Environmental Science program provides 15 dedicated courses, including Environmental Economics, Environmental Ethics, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Auditing, Waste Management, and Global Environmental Change and International Cooperation. These courses strengthen students’ ability to analyze complex sustainability issues, develop environmental management strategies, and understand the importance of international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges.

At the doctoral level, the Environmental Science program offers 11 advanced courses under the Freshwater Ecosystem specialization. Key subjects include Environmental Policy and Law, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Waste Management and Technology, Bioremediation, Natural Resources and Environmental Economics, and Environmental Management Systems and Modeling. These courses support advanced research and the development of evidence-based approaches to address environmental and sustainability challenges.

Through these dedicated full-degree programs across three levels of higher education, UNS provides structured and specialized education that directly addresses sustainability and the SDGs. The programs also contribute to SDG 17 by strengthening the knowledge, research capacity, and expertise needed to support partnerships for sustainable development. In particular, subjects such as Global Environmental Change and International Cooperation equip students to understand international approaches and collaborative efforts in addressing shared environmental challenges. By preparing graduates and researchers to contribute knowledge and expertise to sustainability initiatives, UNS supports stronger cooperation between academic institutions, government, communities, and international partners in advancing the SDGs.
