17.4.1 Education For SDGs Commitment To Meaningful Education

Education for SDGs at Universitas Sebelas Maret

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) promotes the integration of sustainability education across its university curriculum, ensuring that the principles of sustainable development are incorporated into students’ learning experiences across different academic disciplines. This commitment is reinforced through mandatory educational components, including the Ilmu Kealaman Dasar (Basic Natural Sciences) course, which provides students with foundational knowledge of environmental systems, ecological balance, natural resource management, and global environmental challenges. By making relevant sustainability education compulsory for students across all faculties, UNS ensures SDG-related knowledge is accessible to all students, regardless of academic background.

The course is designed to equip students with an understanding of natural systems, scientific processes, and the relationship between human activities and the environment. Its learning materials cover scientific reasoning and methods, the universe, the biosphere, ecosystem balance, ecology, natural resource management, and the relationship between science, technology, and human life. It also discusses environmental issues, including land degradation, pollution, and the social problems associated with natural resource use. The course also references academic publications on global climate change and its impacts on tropical ecosystems and agricultural productivity.

The Semester Learning Plan (Rencana Pembelajaran Semester/RPS) provides further evidence of how sustainability education is translated into specific learning outcomes and classroom activities. Students are expected to understand the importance of protecting nature, identify changes in ecosystems, propose approaches to conserving physical and biological diversity, and apply ecological theories to the sustainable management of natural resources. They are also encouraged to develop responsibility toward environmental degradation and critically evaluate the environmental impacts of scientific and technological developments.

Meaningful learning is supported through lectures, question-and-answer sessions, discussions, presentations, literature reviews, assignments, and case analyses. Students are encouraged to actively explore environmental issues, communicate their perspectives, and develop evidence-based arguments. Their learning achievements are assessed through assignments, examinations, and presentations, ensuring that students demonstrate not only factual understanding but also analytical and critical-thinking skills.

Beyond formal coursework, UNS provides optional seminars, workshops, and community engagement programs related to the SDGs and sustainability. These opportunities enable students to deepen their understanding and apply sustainability principles to real-world challenges in their communities.

UNS also strengthens its institutional capacity for sustainability education and research through the Center for Environmental Studies (Pusat Penelitian Lingkungan Hidup/PPLH), established in 1987. The center conducts environmental research and policy analysis and provides recommendations on environmental issues, supporting the integration of sustainability principles into the university’s teaching, research, and community engagement activities.

Through mandatory curriculum-based learning, interactive educational methods, and complementary sustainability initiatives, UNS demonstrates its commitment to providing relevant and meaningful education on sustainable development. This approach helps students develop environmental awareness, scientific literacy, critical-thinking abilities, and a sense of responsibility for addressing sustainability challenges at local, national, and global levels.
