2.2.1 Campus Food Waste Tracking

Campus Food Waste Tracking

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has started a program to measure and manage food waste on campus. This activity follows the Rector’s Circular Letter No. 2300.1/UN27/HK.06/2023 about Food Waste Measurement and Processing in UNS Canteens. The letter requests that all canteens at UNS record the amount of food waste they produce and process it in a proper manner.

Food waste tracking is part of UNS’s commitment to developing a Green Campus and achieving its sustainability goals. Based on the latest university data, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) produces a total of 1.75 metric tonnes of food waste per year. The measurement covers food waste generated from meals served in campus canteens and dining areas, which are monitored regularly as part of the university’s waste tracking program.

To manage this effectively, UNS has provided separate bins for organic and inorganic waste across campus. Food waste is collected regularly and brought to composting facilities managed by the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, where it is processed into compost. In addition, leaf and other biodegradable waste from campus areas are also collected daily and treated by a partner organization. Through these efforts, approximately 95% of the university’s organic waste is successfully treated, reflecting UNS’s strong dedication to reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable waste management practices.

The food waste measurement initiative currently focuses on canteen-based sources, but UNS plans to expand it to all food service areas in the future. The implementation of Circular Letter No. 2300.1/UN27/HK.06/2023 ensures that UNS continues to monitor and reduce food waste, supporting the university’s sustainability goals.
