Research Center Focused on Environmental Sustainability

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrates a strong institutional commitment to environmental sustainability through the establishment of the Pusat Penelitian Lingkungan Hidup (PPLH) under LPPM UNS, a dedicated research center specializing in environmental research, education, and community engagement.

PPLH UNS is formally accredited with an “A” rating by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment, reflecting its high level of expertise and credibility in environmental governance and sustainability practices. The center plays a strategic role in advancing sustainable development, particularly through a watershed-based (Daerah Aliran Sungai/DAS) approach that integrates ecological, social, and economic dimensions.

Dedicated Staffing (FTE)

PPLH UNS is supported by dedicated full-time equivalent (FTE) staff, consisting of qualified academics, researchers, and technical professionals specializing in environmental science and management. These personnel are actively engaged in the center’s core functions, including research, consultancy, training delivery, and community service. The presence of dedicated FTE staff ensures continuity, professional expertise, and sustained impact in environmental sustainability initiatives.

Contribution to Teaching and Academic Programs

PPLH UNS contributes directly to undergraduate and postgraduate education through curriculum enrichment, teaching support, and academic supervision. The center:

  • Provides expert input to environmental and sustainability-related courses, particularly within Environmental Science and interdisciplinary programs
  • Integrates real-world environmental case studies (e.g., Environmental Impact Assessment/AMDAL, Strategic Environmental Assessment/KLHS, Environmental Management and Monitoring Efforts/UKL-UPL) into teaching and learning processes
  • Supports student research supervision, including undergraduate theses and postgraduate dissertations in environmental sustainability
  • Delivers certified training programs (e.g., AMDAL training) that complement formal curricula and enhance student competencies
  • Functions as a platform for experiential learning, enabling students to participate in applied environmental projects and community-based sustainability initiatives

This integration ensures that the center’s research outputs and professional practices are embedded within the university’s academic ecosystem, strengthening sustainability education across disciplines.

Scope of Activities and Impact

PPLH UNS conducts a wide range of sustainability-focused activities, including:

  • Environmental research and preparation of key regulatory and policy documents (AMDAL, KLHS, UKL-UPL, Regional Environmental Management Performance Index/IKPLHD – State of the Regional Environment Report/SLHD, Environmental Carrying Capacity and Assimilative Capacity Document/D3TLH)
  • Professional training and capacity-building programs in environmental management
  • Advisory and mentoring support for environmental performance initiatives, including contributions to national recognition programs such as Nirwasita Tantra
  • Collaboration with government, industry, and communities to address environmental challenges

Through these activities, PPLH UNS serves as a center of excellence in environmental sustainability, effectively bridging research, education, and real-world implementation while advancing academic development and societal impact.
