17.4.4 Sustainable Literacy

Measuring Sustainability Literacy at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS)

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) actively measures the sustainability literacy of its students, staff, and wider academic community through structured surveys and assessments. One of the key instruments employed is the Questionnaire on the Perception and Understanding of the Green Campus Program at UNS. This questionnaire is part of the research initiative “Economic Valuation of the Green Campus Program,” conducted by the Green Campus UNS team, which aims to evaluate the awareness, knowledge, and engagement of the university community regarding sustainability practices implemented on campus.

The survey targets various groups within the university, including students, academic staff, administrative personnel, security officers, cleaning staff, and alumni. Participants are asked to respond to statements regarding their understanding of the Green Campus program, the importance of sustainable practices, their involvement in sustainability activities, and their perception of the effectiveness and impact of these initiatives. The questionnaire employs a 5-point Likert scale, enabling UNS to quantify the level of sustainability literacy across the campus community.

Key aspects measured include awareness of campus sustainability programs, participation in green initiatives, perception of infrastructure supporting sustainability (e.g., renewable energy, recycling facilities, green transportation), and the perceived influence of these programs on personal behavior and professional development. The survey also explores the respondents’ views on the potential of the Green Campus program to enhance the university’s reputation and serve as a model for other institutions.

By systematically collecting and analyzing this data, UNS is able to evaluate the sustainability literacy of its students and staff, identify areas for improvement, and design targeted educational interventions to enhance their knowledge and skills. The results provide a comprehensive understanding of how well the university community grasps key sustainability concepts, thereby directly contributing to UNS’s efforts to embed sustainability into its educational programs, campus operations, and organizational culture.
