17.4.1 Education For SDGs Commitment To Meaningful Education

Education for SDGs at Universitas Sebelas Maret

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrates a strong commitment to meaningful education on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its mandatory course Ilmu Kealaman Dasar (Basic Natural Sciences). This course is required for all first-year students across every faculty, ensuring that every student, regardless of their major, engages with fundamental topics related to natural sciences and sustainability. By making this course compulsory, UNS guarantees that all students have a shared foundation in understanding global challenges.

The curriculum of Ilmu Kealaman Dasar covers a broad range of topics, including the nature and basic characteristics of living organisms, scientific reasoning and methods, genetic diversity, biotechnology, Earth’s systems, and, notably, global warming and climate change. These topics provide students with knowledge about critical environmental and social issues, making the education directly relevant to the SDGs. The course also includes interactive discussions, assignments, and reviews to encourage active learning and critical thinking.

In addition to the mandatory course, UNS offers optional seminars, workshops, and community engagement programs on SDGs and sustainability. These activities allow students to deepen their understanding, apply what they have learned in practical contexts, and develop skills to contribute to sustainable development in their communities. The combination of required and optional learning opportunities ensures that education about SDGs is both comprehensive and meaningful.

To further strengthen its institutional foundation for sustainability education and research, UNS has also established the Center for Environmental Studies (PPLH) since 1987 (https://pplh.lppm.uns.ac.id/). This center is dedicated to conducting research, policy analysis, and providing recommendations on environmental issues to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It plays an essential role in strengthening the university’s capacity to integrate sustainability principles into teaching, research, and community engagement.

Through this approach, UNS not only integrates SDG education into the formal curriculum but also fosters awareness, knowledge, and action on sustainability among all students. The university’s commitment to providing mandatory, relevant, and optional educational opportunities reflects a strong institutional dedication to preparing students to address global challenges and contribute to sustainable development locally and globally.
