15.3.4 Alien Species Impact Reduction (Policies)

Policy to Reduce the Impact of Alien Invasive Species on Campus

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrates its strong commitment to environmental sustainability through the issuance of Circular Letter No. 82.5/UN27/HK.06/2024 concerning the Policy to Reduce the Impact of Alien Invasive Species on Campus. This policy aligns with Article 1, Paragraph 5(d) of Rector’s Regulation No. 872A/UN27/2013 on the Guidelines for Green Campus Management, which emphasizes the Rector’s responsibility to maintain ecological balance in managing natural and social environments that support a conducive academic atmosphere.

The policy aims to prevent and control the presence of alien invasive species that may threaten ecosystems, biodiversity, the economy, and human health within the UNS campus area. Several action measures are outlined, including conducting risk analysis and implementing invasive species risk status assessments, as well as enforcing eradication, destruction, and population control measures when necessary. Quarantine procedures are also mandated to prevent the introduction and spread of alien invasive species both into and within the campus area.

Under this policy, the Rector is authorized to appoint and supervise specific units responsible for conducting risk analysis and implementing invasive species control. Furthermore, any academic community member wishing to bring or introduce alien species onto the campus must obtain written permission from the Rector, ensuring that such activities do not endanger or harm ecosystem sustainability. Violations of this policy—such as the unauthorized introduction of alien species or failure to conduct risk assessments—may result in written warnings, permit revocation, or other sanctions in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Through this policy, UNS actively contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land, particularly indicator 15.3.4 – Alien species impact reduction (policies), by establishing a structured and enforceable framework to minimize the ecological risks posed by invasive species on campus.
