UNS Promotes Land Conservation and Sustainable Land Use through Education and Action

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable land use through a range of educational, collaborative, and field-based initiatives. In line with global efforts to maintain the balance of terrestrial ecosystems, UNS actively organizes and supports activities focusing on conservation, restoration, and raising public awareness of the importance of sustainable management of land, forests, and wild areas.

  • Green Campaign Alas Bromo 2024: Promoting Sustainable Use and Conservation of Forest Land

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrated its strong commitment to the sustainable use of land through the Green Campaign Alas Bromo 2024, an event held on December 19, 2024, at the Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) of Mount Bromo, Karanganyar. The campaign involved the planting of 3,000 Sonokeling tree seedlings by the UNS Business Management Agency (BPU), the Forestry Education and Training Unit (UPT PPK), and more than 150 students from the Faculty of Agriculture. This event served as a tangible initiative to promote conservation and sustainable utilisation of forest land, aligning with both national and global environmental targets.

During the event, Prof. Dr. Ir. Supriyadi, M.P., Head of UPT PPK UNS, emphasized that the campaign supports the national FOLU Net Sink 2030 initiative, which aims to ensure that carbon absorption from the forestry and land sector exceeds emissions by 2030. He emphasized that the campaign is not merely a tree-planting activity, but also an effort to promote continuous maintenance and care of the forest ecosystem. This long-term commitment reflects UNS’s dedication to conservation, sustainable land use, and climate action through education, research, and community participation.

Representing the Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Zainal Arifin, S.T., M.T., reaffirmed UNS’s support for the Green Campaign as a strategic step toward achieving sustainable forest management. The collaboration between UNS, government institutions, and local communities is expected to strengthen collective awareness of the importance of maintaining forest ecosystems. The Green Campaign Alas Bromo 2024 thus embodies UNS’s continuous effort to organize events about the sustainable use of land that contribute to the conservation and sustainable utilization of forests and wild lands, supporting the realization of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land.

  • Forest Management Practice (PPH) 2024: Strengthening Knowledge on Sustainable Use of Forest Land

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), through the Forest Management Study Program of the Faculty of Agriculture, organized the Forest Management Practice (PPH) 2024 from 14 to 23 December 2024 at the Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF), Sukabumi. This event, which focused on the sustainable use of land, involved 95 students from the 2022 cohort and was designed to enhance their technical and practical understanding of forest ecosystems. The program provided hands-on experience in forest management, land conservation, and the sustainable use of land, particularly in areas involving forests and wildlands.

Throughout the program, students participated in various activities, including social forestry, soil and water conservation, the utilization of non-timber forest products, forest cultivation, inventory, and mapping. These modules equipped participants with essential competencies to apply sustainable forest management principles in real-world contexts. The practice emphasized not only the ecological importance of forest conservation but also its social and economic value for local communities, aligning with UNS’s commitment to promoting sustainability in education and practice.

The PPH 2024 concluded with a Conservation Field Trip to Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (GGP) at the Situ Gunung Resort, Sukabumi, where students observed natural attractions and conservation-based tourism areas, including waterfalls and suspension bridges. Through this experiential learning approach, UNS continues to support and organise events aimed at promoting the conservation and sustainable use of land, including forests and wildlands, demonstrating its active role in achieving the goals of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the Green Campus vision, the Graduate School of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) organized a tree planting activity on 6 December 2024 under the Green Environment Program, a key component of its Green Office initiative. The event, held in conjunction with the Healthy Friday Movement (Gerakan Jumat Sehat), involved the planting of 50 ornamental plants in the front yard of the Graduate School building. This event, focused on the sustainable use of land, aimed to promote the conservation and sustainable utilization of campus land, transforming the academic environment into a greener and healthier space.

The activity was officially opened by the Dean of the Graduate School and attended by the Vice Dean, Heads of Study Programs, Academic Senate members, Quality Assurance Units, and staff representatives, reflecting strong institutional participation. Through this initiative, the Graduate School emphasized the importance of maintaining and expanding green spaces as part of its sustainable land management strategy. It also highlighted the collective responsibility of the academic community in supporting environmental preservation efforts within the university.

By implementing the Green Environment Program, the Graduate School of UNS continues to support and organize events aimed at promoting the conservation and sustainable use of the land, particularly within the campus area.
