Universitas Sebelas Maret’s Climate Action Plan and Collaboration with Local Stakeholders

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) demonstrates its strong commitment to climate action through the implementation of the Rencana Strategis Pengembangan UNS Green Campus 2020–2024 (UNS Green Campus Strategic Development Plan). This official document, published on the UNS Green Campus website (https://greencampus.uns.ac.id/legal-basis/), serves as the university’s formal framework for sustainable environmental management and climate action. It outlines strategic directions in several focus areas, including Energy and Climate Change, Waste and Water Management, and Sustainable Transportation, positioning UNS as a model for environmentally responsible higher education institutions.

To ensure that the Climate Action Plan is not only internal but also shared and implemented collaboratively, UNS actively engages with local government bodies and community groups in its sustainability initiatives. One notable example is UNS’s partnership with the Surakarta City Government, reflected in the program “Implementasi Konsep Green Campus, UNS Dukung Solo Menuju Transportasi Berkelanjutan” (Implementation of the Green Campus Concept: UNS Supports Solo Toward Sustainable Transportation). This collaboration supports the city’s transition to sustainable urban mobility and demonstrates UNS’s role in contributing to regional climate mitigation efforts.

Moreover, the university maintains partnerships with various stakeholders to enhance community resilience and awareness toward climate-related risks. The Master’s Program in Geography Education has conducted collaborative projects with local government units and schools in the Solo Raya area, such as the “Peningkatan Kapasitas Masyarakat dalam Menghadapi Multirisiko Berbagai Bencana Berbasis Masyarakat” program (Community Capacity Building for Multi-Hazard Disaster Preparedness). These initiatives strengthen adaptation strategies and promote community engagement in disaster risk reduction, a critical component of climate action.

In addition, UNS collaborates with national agencies, such as the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), to enhance research, education, and public awareness in meteorological and climate sciences. The memorandum of understanding signed between UNS and BMKG highlights the institution’s role in utilizing climate data, promoting education, and developing capacity relevant to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

UNS also extends its climate education efforts to local schools through initiatives such as the Eco-Friendly School Award, organized by the UNS Green Campus and the SDGs Center. This program promotes sustainable behavior and climate awareness among students and educators in the greater Solo area, thereby strengthening the link between university-led climate strategies and community-level implementation.

Through these efforts, UNS ensures that its Climate Action Plan is not only a formal policy document but also a living framework shared with and implemented alongside local governments, educational institutions, and communities. This collaborative approach reflects the university’s commitment to advancing SDG 13 (Climate Action) by integrating policy, education, and partnerships to foster a resilient and sustainable future for the region.
