11.4.2 Promote Sustainable Commuting

UNS is committed to encouraging the transition towards a more environmentally friendly campus lifestyle through the promotion of sustainable mobility among its academic community (students, lecturers, and staff). Various strategies and policies have been implemented to ensure that the campus serves not only as a center of education but also as a model for sustainable transportation practices.

  • UNS Accessible via Public Transportation

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has good accessibility through public transportation. The campus is connected to various modes of transport, ranging from Trans Jateng city buses and Batik Solo Trans, which have routes stopping around the campus area, to the Solo–Yogyakarta Commuter Line (KRL), with a planned dedicated shelter near UNS. The availability of public transport makes it easier for students, lecturers, and visitors to reach the campus without relying on private vehicles, while also supporting sustainable mobility in line with UNS’s commitment to becoming a Green Campus.

  • Internal Campus Bus

UNS provides campus bus services operating on weekdays (Monday to Friday) to facilitate mobility between faculties, buildings, and zones within the campus. This service aims to reduce the academic community’s dependence on private vehicles. The campus bus serves not only as a mode of transportation but also as an educational tool for behavioral change, encouraging campus users to switch to smaller-scale mass transportation that is more environmentally friendly.

  • Pedestrian Paths, Bicycle Parking, and Disability Facilities

To support non-motorized mobility, UNS has provided comfortable, shaded, and safe pedestrian pathways. Bicycle parking areas are also available at strategic points as a form of support for using bicycles as a daily mode of transport. To ensure inclusivity, during the 2024 Student Orientation Program (PKKMB), UNS introduced special accessibility vehicles for students with special needs, ensuring that their participation in campus activities is not hindered by mobility barriers.

  • Hari Bebas Emisi (Car-Free Day)

Car-Free Day at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is a Green Campus initiative launched in July 2020 to reduce fossil fuel usage and emissions on campus. This program is held once a month, every first Friday, from 06:00 AM to 05:30 PM. On this day, access for private motorized vehicles into the campus area is strictly limited. The academic community is encouraged to adopt eco-friendly modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling, or using public transportation and campus buses. This policy not only serves as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions but also as an educational step to foster a green mobility culture among students, lecturers, and staff.

  • Shuttle and Electric Vehicles

In addition to campus buses, the campus provides shuttle vehicles and several internal electric vehicles. These vehicles are designed to connect points that are less accessible by the main bus routes or to support special accessibility needs. Electric vehicles and hybrid fleets are utilized to support daily campus operations, including staff shuttle services, facility monitoring, and logistical and administrative purposes. The replacement of older vehicle units is carried out gradually, following the procurement cycle and budget capacity, with efficiency and sustainability as the main priorities
