11.4.1. Sustainable Practice Targets
Implementation of Sustainable Transportation Practices
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) aims to develop sustainable transportation practices as part of its Green Campus strategy for 2020–2024. These efforts include reducing the use of motorized vehicles, promoting low-emission transportation modes, and improving the campus mobility system to make it more environmentally friendly, efficient, and sustainable. These programs directly support the achievement of SDG 11 by setting targets for sustainable transportation practices, including measuring and developing greener commuting alternatives, such as walking, cycling, using electric vehicles, point-to-point shuttles, and public transportation.
- Green Campus Transportation Awareness Program
This program aims to raise awareness and encourage active participation among students in creating an environmentally friendly, efficient, and sustainable campus transportation system. The awareness sessions are held annually across all faculties and schools at UNS from 2020 to 2024. Through these activities, students are introduced to various green transportation initiatives developed by the university, including the use of electric vehicles, the provision of bicycle lanes, emission-free zones, and policies that limit motorized vehicles within the campus area.
- Prohibition of Motorized Vehicle Use for New Students
This policy prohibits new students from using motorized vehicles during the orientation period. It is implemented annually across all faculties and schools at UNS, for one month following the new student welcoming ceremony, and has been consistently applied from 2020 to 2024. The policy aims to raise students’ awareness of the importance of using environmentally friendly transportation while also supporting efforts to reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion on campus.
- Zero Emission Day at UNS
Universitas Sebelas Maret has been continuously observing Zero Emission Day for four years, starting in 2020. This event demonstrates UNS’s commitment to supporting efforts to reduce carbon emissions and implement Green Campus principles across the university. The Zero Emission Day is not only for students but also for all members of the academic community, encouraging awareness and active participation in achieving low-emission mobility, energy efficiency, and an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
- Public Transport Day at UNS
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) established and began implementing Public Transport Day in 2022, and the program has continued annually through 2024.
- Sustainable Transportation Leadership Award
As a form of appreciation for the active role of the academic community in promoting sustainable transportation on campus, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) organizes the UNS Transportation Leadership Award. This program recognizes lecturers and staff who are pioneers in implementing the Green Campus Transportation initiatives. Through a selection process, UNS appoints one lecturer and one staff member each year who have made a significant contribution to promoting environmentally friendly transportation, energy efficiency, and emission reduction on campus. The awarding process has been carried out annually from 2022 to 2024.
- Development of Point-to-Point Shuttle and Feeder Transportation Collaboration
To improve the efficiency and sustainability of the campus transportation system, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has implemented a program to increase the number of vehicles, users, and frequency of the point-to-point shuttle service on campus. UNS also collaborates with feeder transportation services around student housing as part of the on-campus point-to-point shuttle system. This program aims to enhance the availability and accessibility of sustainable transportation within the campus.
The collaboration has been developed gradually from 2020 to 2024, with the following stages:
- 2020: Conducting preliminary discussions and exploring partnership plans with feeder transportation providers near the campus.
- 2021: Signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the collaboration.
- 2022–2024: Implementation and strengthening of the collaboration, integrating feeder services around student housing as part of the campus point-to-point shuttle system.
- Encouraging the Use of Zero-Emission Vehicles on Campus
UNS has implemented a program to increase the use of zero-emission vehicles as part of its efforts to establish an environmentally friendly and sustainable campus transportation system. The program includes two main activities:
- Provision of Zero-Emission Vehicles for Point-to-Point Shuttle Service
UNS has developed a point-to-point shuttle service on campus using electric (zero-emission) vehicles. The procurement of these vehicles has been carried out gradually from 2020 to 2024, with one additional vehicle added each year at the Kentingan Campus. The program aims to reduce the use of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles and lower carbon emissions on campus.
- Provision of Electric Bicycles and Supporting Facilities
In addition to the shuttle service, UNS provides electric bicycles and supporting facilities for lecturers and staff at Kentingan Campus. This initiative has been implemented from 2020 to 2024, with 12 electric bicycles procured each year and distributed on a rotational basis across various faculties. The program is designed to encourage the academic community to adopt low-emission transportation modes and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Reduction of Parking Areas and Optimization of Green Open Spaces
The policy to reduce parking areas on campus is implemented through paid parking, the creation of motorcycle parking pools, and multi-purpose parking buildings. Paid parking was first introduced in 2022 through awareness campaigns and the development of subscription parking programs as an initial step toward a sustainable campus transportation system. The program continued gradually in 2023 and 2024, aiming to optimize campus space utilization, reduce dependency on private vehicles, and encourage a shift toward more environmentally friendly modes of transportation.
The construction of integrated parking facilities (parking pools) is guided by the goal of converting motorcycle parking areas into Green Open Spaces (RTH). This initiative began in 2020 with the construction of multi-level motorcycle parking, enabling approximately 10% of parking areas in each faculty to be converted into RTH. The development process proceeded in stages: in 2021 at the Graduate School, 2022 at the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), 2023 at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), and continued in 2024 at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) and Faculty of Agriculture (FP).
Similarly, the creation of pooled parking buildings follows the indicator of converting car parking areas into Green Open Spaces (RTH). This program began in 2022 with initial activities that included awareness campaigns, feasibility studies, and securing funding through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. In 2023, the Detailed Engineering Design (DED) for the Tower parking area was prepared, forming the technical basis for constructing integrated parking facilities. This was followed by the physical construction of Tower Parking Building 1, the first implementation of the integrated parking management plan on campus.
Through these various initiatives, UNS systematically sets targets and measures sustainable transportation practices on campus. These programs not only reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion but also encourage the academic community to adopt greener mobility habits. In this way, UNS consistently contributes to the achievement of SDG 11, particularly in developing an environmentally friendly, efficient, and sustainable transportation system.
