UNS Launches Free Meal Program to Support SDG 2: Zero Hunger
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has launched a free meal program as a concrete commitment to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) point 2, Zero Hunger. This program is designed to help students in need gain access to nutritious and adequate food on campus.
This free meal program is held annually at several strategic locations on campus in collaboration with various parties, including cooperatives, zakat institutions, and cafeteria managers. In addition to providing direct food assistance, this program also encourages a culture of mutual care among students and instills the value of mutual cooperation as part of UNS’s character.
Through this program, UNS affirms its commitment to being an inclusive and globally competitive campus, excelling not only in academics but also in student welfare. This effort aligns with the implementation of the SDG 2 indicator, Student Hunger Interventions, which emphasizes the importance of concrete university interventions in reducing hunger and improving food security.
As a continuation of this initiative, UNS also runs various programs and activities aligned with its Zero Hunger mission. These include regular food drives, social and religious programs, and literacy and food innovations on campus. Here are some concrete examples of these programs:
- During the month of Ramadan 2024, every day for 30 days, UNS together with the Nurul Huda Mosque and UPZ UNS provided 500 dinner packs for students
During Ramadan 1445 H, the Sebelas Maret University Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ UNS) launched a fast-breaking package distribution program. This program is one of its flagship programs during Ramadan. One of its goals is to facilitate donors who wish to provide iftar meals to fasting communities.
As of the first week of Ramadan, UPZ UNS has distributed 2,900 iftar meal packages. These packages are distributed to the Nurul Huda Mosque at Sebelas Maret University and several locations in Surakarta.
The distribution of iftar packages at the Nurul Huda Mosque is held daily and begins with a prayer service before breaking the fast. A total of 500 iftar packages are provided to the congregation each day. The event runs from 4:00 PM WIB until the time for breaking the fast.
Abdullah, one of the participants in the prayer service and iftar, expressed his gratitude to UPZ UNS and the donors for organizing the iftar program.

- Jumat Berkah at UNS Mosques, Present for Students in Need
As a manifestation of its concern for student welfare, UNS through its Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ) regularly holds Friday Blessings activities at several campus mosques. This program, held every Friday, distributes hundreds of free meals or lunch boxes after Friday prayers to students and the surrounding community in need.
This activity also provides a platform for students to directly participate as volunteers in the management and distribution of aid. This social action takes place periodically at mosques on campus, such as the Nurul Huda Mosque and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Mosque. It is part of UNS’s efforts to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 2, Zero Hunger, by ensuring access to food for all.

- UNS Library Angkringan, a Literacy Space and Casual Dining for Students
Beyond social and religious activities, UNS also supports student well-being through creative literacy and relaxation approaches. One example is the launch of the Angkringan Pustaka program, initiated by the UNS Library Unit. Angkringan Pustaka UNS provides reading material, including novels, skill-building books, biographies, and other inspirational books. In addition, the Angkringan Pustaka also serves free traditional snacks, a la HIK (Special Village Dishes), available to users, especially students, who take advantage of the program. Angkringan Pustaka UNS is held monthly on the last Friday of the month. An initiative of the Head of the Library Unit, this event has been running since 2016, and the food and beverages served are funded by contributions from Library Unit staff. This program creates a relaxed atmosphere where students can read, discuss, and enjoy light angkringan dishes in the library lobby.
This concept symbolizes the balance between literacy needs and simple food for students. By providing comfortable spaces and access to snacks, UNS strives to create a healthy, productive, and empowering learning environment. This initiative aligns with SDGs point 2, Zero Hunger, and point 4, Quality Education.

- UNS Food Bank Supports Student Food Needs
In addition to the Angkringan Pustaka Program, in an effort to support student well-being and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 2, Zero Hunger, UNS has a Food Bank program that actively provides easily accessible food on the UNS campus. This Food Bank program serves as a food distribution point or provides meals to students in need. This initiative emerged as a concrete response to the financial needs of students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds or those living far from their parents.
This program does not stand alone but involves active collaboration across UNS. Several faculties participate in innovative logistics procurement. The UNS Food Bank provides a variety of snacks, instant noodles, dairy products, and beverages, placed on shelves for easy access by students. With this free Food Bank, it is hoped that no UNS student will experience difficulty obtaining adequate food. This program is a tangible demonstration of the campus’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. This effort also demonstrates UNS’ commitment to creating a campus environment that cares about students’ basic needs and supports the implementation of the SDG 2 Student Hunger Interventions indicator, which is to ensure adequate and sustainable access to food in higher education.
- Qurban at UNS: An Annual Tradition Involving Students as Committee Members
UNS regularly holds an annual Eid al-Adha sacrifice program as part of its commitment to sharing food with the wider community. Through the Qurban Sampai Loosok (QSP) program, managed by the UNS Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ), thousands of families benefit from the distribution of sacrificial meat each year. In 2024, the UNS UPZ will again implement the Qurban Sampai Loosok (QSP) program from June 17-20, 2024 (10-13 Dzulhijjah 1445 AH). In 2024, the UNS UPZ managed a total of 15 cows and 138 goats/sheep. This activity successfully reached remote areas and involved students as committee members and volunteers.
This program not only focuses on worship but also fosters a spirit of social awareness among the academic community. Students learn about managing socio-religious activities and the importance of sharing with others as a manifestation of the implementation of humanitarian values on campus. This program aligns with the implementation of SDG 2 Zero Hunger, which aims to end hunger and achieve food security and improved nutrition.
