12.2.1 Ethical Sourcing Policy
Sustainable Procurement and Ethical Sourcing at UNS
Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) reaffirms its commitment to sustainable and ethical procurement of goods and services, in line with Presidential Regulation No. 16 of 2018 concerning the Amendment to Presidential Regulation Number 16 of 2018 on Government Goods/Services Procurement. Sustainable Procurement at UNS aims to create optimal economic benefits, not only for the university as the user but also for society, while significantly reducing negative environmental impacts throughout the lifecycle of goods and services.
This commitment is reinforced by the issuance of UNS Rector Regulation No. 38 of 2021 on Guidelines for Goods and Services Procurement, which outlines the fundamental principles of procurement at UNS to ensure efficiency, transparency, accountability, and value for money, while upholding ethics and sustainability. These guidelines emphasize the importance of avoiding unhealthy practices, labor discrimination, and excessive exploitation within the supply chain, so that every product and service used at UNS is more environmentally friendly and socially responsible.
Procurement implementation at UNS considers three main aspects:
- Economic aspect, namely cost efficiency in production and usage of goods/services throughout their lifespan;
- Social aspect, including the empowerment of small businesses, fair working conditions, community and local business empowerment, equality, and diversity;
- Environmental aspect, which encompasses reducing negative impacts on health, air, soil, and water quality, as well as the responsible use of natural resources.
In the context of food procurement, UNS issued Circular Letter Number 2190.2/UN27/HK.06/2023, encouraging canteen and cafeteria owners within the UNS environment to use food sourced from sustainable agriculture. This policy ensures that food consumed on campus is ethically sourced, supports local farming practices, and minimizes environmental impact.
Moreover, through Rector Instruction Number 32 of 2023 concerning climate change mitigation and adaptation, UNS strengthens waste management practices based on the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, and composting, as part of efforts to reduce the campus community’s vulnerability to climate change impacts. Thus, procurement and use of food at UNS not only take environmental sustainability into account but also uphold ethical principles and social responsibility.
Through the implementation of sustainable and ethical procurement policies, Sebelas Maret University ensures that every process of procuring and using food and campus supplies aligns with the principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability. These policies not only support sustainable farming practices and responsible resource management but also reaffirm UNS’s commitment to creating an ethical, environmentally friendly, and functional campus for the entire academic community and surrounding society

RELEVANT RESEARCH
To achieve SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, in 2024, UNS provided research funding and community service programs focused on SDG 12 topics. For example, several UNS researchers conducted studies related to sustainable consumption and production, including: “Pengembangan Usaha Batik Ecoprint pada UMKM Soloecoprint.id Melalui Peningkatan Kualitas Produksi Corak Pewarna Alam” by Prof. Dr. Sayekti Wahyuningsih, and “Diversifikasi Produk UMKM Dewi Batik Boyolali melalui Penerapan Teknik Batik Cap Kertas dan Pewarnaan Alami untuk Pengembangan Motif Batik Simplicity” by Prof. Dr. Sarwono. These studies promote ethical sourcing by using natural dyes and environmentally friendly production methods, ensuring that materials are obtained responsibly.
