The application of the environmentally friendly campus of UNS is related to the three main pillars of its development; they are: green rules, green attitude and green lifestyle, and green infrastructure.

Education at UNS, then, applies it to the courses, research, and community service.

This is shown by many activities done by the UNS management institutionally and personally. The education of UNS in realizing green attitude and green lifestyleis conducted through the following cases:

  1. Number of courses offered by UNS which is related to environment and its sustainability is significantly increased. Almost all of study programs provide courses to improve green attitude dan green lifestyle.
  2. Research and community service topics related to environment and its sustainability are based on strategic issues established on RIP (the main plan of Community Service and Research)of UNS 2011-2015; theyare: climate change and biodiversity; new and renewable energy; and food security.
  3. There are plenty of academic and non-academic activities related to environment and its sustainability. The concerns and awareness of any parties in UNS is among others: Komunitas Gerakan Hijau Universitas Sebelas Maret (Green Movement Community / GMC UNS) which was established on August 2010.
  4. UNS operates website related to environment and its sustainability since 2011. The websites can be accessed on http://greencampus.uns.ac.id/ and http://gogreen.uns.ac.id/

UNS also takes part in making basics, values and implementation of sustainable development in line with the United Nations’ policy on ”The Decade of Education for Sustainable Development”, which is described in Education components as follows:


“HOW UNS CONSIDERS ABOUT GREEN ENVIRONMENT” In implementing and improving UNS as a green campus, UNS brings three main development pillars: green rules, green attitude and green lifestyle, and green infrastructure. Green rules are carried out by the commitment of the leaders to create policies concerning the arrangement, utilization and control of land and buildings. Implementation of Green Campus Concept GREEN LIFESTYLE AND GREEN ATTITUDE ARE APPLIED IN VARIOUS ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED BY STUDENTS AND LECTURERS WHO SUPPORT GREEN CAMPUS GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE IS APPLIED IN THE PLAN AND DEVELOPMENT OF LAND, BUILDINGS AND CAMPUS FACILITIES TO BE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY. According to the policy stated in Pedoman P3LB-UNS (Guidelines on the Arrangement and Use of Land and Buildings on UNS Campus), 2010, construction is executed as follows:
  1. Kentingan as the main campus, is directed to be green campus to be environmentally friendly and humanistic, the campus is designed with open space for plants, experimental garden, green lane, artificial wood, and pedestrian path to achieve clean, cool, and comfortable environment.
  2. UNS physical development is no longer horizontally constructed but optimized in existing construction to be developed vertically with minimum of 4-floor building, so the activity space is expanded for 17,188 m2 in 2013/2014.
  3. Constructing more pedestrian path for 3,478 m to support green campus.
UNS develops asset utilization based on the procedure and considering the principle of sustainability, resource availability, transparency and accountability which is stated in Rector’s decree No. 119/H27/HK/2011 on the Regulation of Asset Management of Universitas Sebelas Maret. As part of Surakarta (Solo) City, campus UNS supports Ecocultural City-base program of the local government by allocating certain land for city in a wood concept. Besides, UNS supports in achieving the cultural characteristics of the city. UNS controls land and campus environment through campus integration concept by specifically considering the context of Campus UNS which holds the spirit to shape/strengthen the character and identity of the campus and strengthen/clarify the space structure on campus. Along with the policy of the United Nation stated in “The Decade of Education for Sustainable Development” UNS has laid the foundations, values and implementation of sustainable development shown in the components establishment of ”Setting and Infrastructure” in campus UNS, Kentingan as follows: A. Green Open Space  On campus Kentingan green open area is 24.729 ha or 41.76%. Development of green space in the campus based need for green space which has the function of ecological and social functions of culture.

B. Campus Woods Most of Green Open Space are covered by vegetation that forms campus woods. This is part of UNS’ support towards “Solo Eco-cultural City” program.

C. Lake

Besides being functioned as the element of Green Open Space, with the width of 0,53 ha, the lake will be functioned as water conservation, natural landscape, and biodiversity proliferation such as fish and water plants

D. Pedestrian Path and Road

The constructed pedestrian path are: pedestrian path in the inner circle of main buildings, pedestrian path connecting among faculties, and pedestrian path of campus entrance –boulevard

A safe and comfortable pedestrian path facility in the building area heading to the other buildings or facilities to be based on the Ministerial Regulation of General Regulation no. 30/PRT/M/2006 Chapter 2B.
